So eager he was
to escape
the wombâs comfortable tedium,
he dove headfirst
down the elastic canal,
his feet flutter kicking behind him
like an Olympianâs.
His mother laboured not,
merely relinquished
her will.

Eight days
his cries
pierced the tender air,
stronger than the shofarâs blast,
chased the Angel of Death.
He cried eight days,
Benjamin, son of Jonah
of Tudela,
until,
cradled in the sandekâs arms,
he felt the mohelâs ritual cut,
